Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum. Elevate your culinary dishes with West Coast Seeds Greek Oregano, renowned for its pungent and flavorful leaves. This hardy herb thrives when established, filling your garden with a wild mountain aroma and attracting pollinators with its tiny white or pink flowers. Perfect for drying, Greek oregano maintains its robust flavor for months after harvest, making it an essential addition to any herb collection.

Key Features:

  • Best for Cooking: Pungent and flavorful leaves ideal for meats, eggs, and roasted vegetables.
  • Hardy & Resilient: Very hardy when established, suitable for various climates.
  • Attracts Pollinators: Tiny white flowers are highly attractive to bees.
  • Versatile Growing: Great for containers and garden beds.
  • Easy to Dry: Maintains strong flavor when dried, perfect for long-term storage.

Growing Information:

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Season: Warm season
  • Exposure: Full sun
  • Zone: Hardy to Zone 5

Timing: Start indoors in plug trays from late winter to mid-spring. Using bottom heat to achieve a constant soil temperature of 15°C (60°F) will yield the best results. Germination occurs in 7 to 14 days.

Starting Instructions:

  • Seed Handling: Oregano seeds are dust-like, so handle with care.
  • Sowing: Distribute seeds evenly on the surface of moist, sterilized seed starting mix. Do not bury the seeds.
  • Bottom Heat: Improves germination success rate. Keep soil on the dry side as seedlings grow.
  • Transplanting: Pot on as necessary or transplant to the garden in late spring to early summer.

Growing Tips: Grow Greek oregano in a sunny, warm spot. Space plants 25cm (10″) apart. Cut back plants after flowering to prevent straggly growth. Divide some plants in autumn to bring inside over winter. Trim the year’s growth to about 6cm (2½”) from the soil.

Harvesting: Pick leaves throughout the season as needed. Dry or freeze leaves for long-term storage. Store dried leaves or whole stalks in airtight containers away from bright light.

Companion Planting: Oregano repels cabbage moths and can be planted between rows of Brassicas. It also pairs well with asparagus and basil. When in bloom, oregano attracts beneficial pollinators to your garden.

Enhance your garden and kitchen with the rich flavor and hardiness of West Coast Seeds Greek Oregano. Ideal for health-conscious gardeners and culinary enthusiasts, this herb is a versatile and easy-to-grow addition to any garden.
