General Information:
Microgreens are baby salad greens, similar to sprouts, but grown in soil. They can be planted just like any other herb or vegetable seeds, making them an excellent source of fresh vegetables indoors all winter.
Difficulty:
Easy
We Recommend:
If we have to make one recommendation, it has to be Sunflower Microgreens (MG435). They’re unusual, delicious, and substantial, working well with any kind of dressing.
Season & Zone:
Microgreens can be grown at any time of the year as long as you can supply enough light.
Timing:
Timing microgreens depends on the individual kinds of greens you will be growing. Cress grows really fast, while carrot seeds can take 2-3 weeks to germinate.
Starting:
Follow the planting instructions for each variety of seeds. Use sterilized seed starting soil in shallow trays with drainage holes. Spread soil to a depth of 2-3 inches and sow seeds densely. Mist the soil regularly to keep it moist like a wrung-out sponge. Cover the tray to trap moisture and prevent rapid evaporation.
Growing:
Remove the cover and provide bright light once the first sprout is visible. From late spring to early autumn, microgreens can be grown outdoors under daylight. Indoors, use supplemental light, particularly in winter. Aim for full spectrum lights to keep microgreens short and stout.
Harvest:
Microgreens can be pulled from the soil and rinsed until all soil particles are washed away. Enjoy them whole or trim with scissors. Microgreens are ready when the first leaf pair (cotyledon) opens fully and turns green. They can also be left to grow and harvested as needed.
