Growing Instructions:

Season & Zone:

  • Season: Warm season
  • Exposure: Full sun

Timing:

  • Sowing Indoors: Start seeds indoors in individual peat or coir pots 3-4 weeks before transplanting.
  • Direct Sowing: Wait until mid-June when the soil is warm. If weather cools, resow as needed.
  • Germination: Optimal soil temperature for germination is 15-30°C (60-85°F).

Starting:

  • Sowing Depth: Sow 3-4 seeds 2cm (1″) deep per spot.
  • Spacing: Thin to the strongest seedling, spacing plants 23cm (9″) apart in rows 90cm (36″) apart.

Growing:

  • Ideal pH: 6.0-6.8
  • Soil: Choose warm, well-drained soil. Raised beds work well.
  • Nutrition: Add dolomite lime and compost or well-rotted manure to the bed and mix in ½-1 cup of complete organic fertilizer beneath each transplant.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist and avoid watering the leaves to prevent disease.

Harvest:

  • Continuous Harvest: Make successive plantings every 2-3 weeks until about 3 months before the first fall frost date.
  • Picking: Keep cucamelons regularly picked to encourage ongoing production.

Companion Planting:

  • Companions: Plant cucamelons beside asparagus, beans, Brassicas, celery, corn, dill, kohlrabi, lettuce, onion, peas, radish, and tomatoes.
  • Avoid: Potatoes and sage.
  • Natural Trellis: Corn and sunflowers can act as a trellis for cucamelons.
